Don’t go on holiday without travel insurance

Financial statistics provider Defaquto has revealed that holiday makers are wasting over £250 million a year on UK travel insurance, purely because they are too lazy and prefer to take it out with the travel agent they book the holiday with, rather than look for it themselves! In fact over 60% of us take this route and find ourselves stuck with horrendously expensive single trip insurance that doesn’t necessarily provide the best cover around.

You should never go abroad with out having holiday insurance. Imagine if you had an accident or fell ill with food poisoning, all to frequent a condition might we add, you would be in for enormous costs if you did not take out travel insurance. In many countries there is no such thing as the NHS so you would have to pay for all medical costs, repatriation costs etc. The list is endless and each item can be surprisingly expensive. Travel insurance will cover you against such incidents and many more besides.

What types of travel insurance are available?

Single trip travel insurance – If you are going to Europe or somewhere worldwide for a week or two and need cover then you can purchase insurance for the duration of the trip. This is the most popular type of travel insurance available at present. You can insure a single person, a couple, family or even obtain group travel insurance. You are covered for illnesses, accidents, lost baggage, stolen money, stolen passports etc. The level of cover will vary from insurer to insurer.

Annual travel insurance – otherwise known as multi trip insurance this insurance is far cheaper than buying lots of single trip insurance policies if you are planning to go abroad more than once in a year. It covers you for the whole year no matter how many times you go. Again, you can insure a single person, couple and families with this policy. You are covered for illnesses, accidents, lost baggage, stolen money, stolen passports etc. The level of cover will vary from insurer to insurer.

Backpackers travel insurance – known as long stay insurance this is a specifically designed policy with backpackers in mind. As most backpackers plan to be away for a year or two in a multitude of different countries this backpackers insurance covers them against illness, accidents, theft, trip cancellation and lots more besides. Again the level of cover provided will vary form insurer to insurer.

Specialist “add ons” - If you are planning a winter sports holiday such as a ski holiday or snowboarding trip, or want to get away on a golf break then many insurers will offer special “add ons” to their standard travel insurance policy. These will provide specific additional cover for ski insurance, snowboarding insurance or golf travel insurance. Each company will provide varying levels of cover at an additional premium to their standard policy.

Where can I get travel insurance from?

As mentioned at the start, travel agents will always encourage you to take out travel insurance with them at the point of selling you the holiday. Just remember that their inflated prices do not mean excellent levels of cover. Many retail stores such as Boots and Tesco’s promote their travel insurance products in store. You can get far better and cheaper travel insurance online. So many insurance companies offer the product that price seems to be the key factor in this crowded and noisy market place.
