Without breakdown insurance you would be left stranded!

Cars break down at the most inconvenient times. It’s normally when its freezing cold and you are travelling alone on the motorway with no service stations for miles around. According to Green Flag, one of the largest UK providers of breakdown cover, calls for assistance rise by 26% between October and February. The main causes for this are that cars either won’t start because of the weather conditions or minor accidents occur more frequently in cold snaps.

Car break down cover isn’t a compulsory purchase like car insurance, but a vital one. There’s nothing worse than motoring along then breaking down in the middle of nowhere and not being insured for it. Recovery to a local garage, your home or your travel destination without break down cover can be horrendously expensive and will take far longer to organise than calling your breakdown recovery company and asking them to come rescue you!

What types of breakdown cover are available?

The first choice you generally have to make is whether you want to insure yourself and your family in any car, or just insure the vehicle you own and whoever drives it.

Here are the break down service options that are generally available; these do vary from insurer to insurer.

Option 1 - this is the cheapest and least comprehensive form of breakdown cover available and is known as roadside assistance. The breakdown cover provider will help you at the roadside and take you to the nearest garage if they can’t fix the problem.

Option 2 – this slightly more expensive option covers you for help at the roadside and if the repair can’t be prompt they will either take you back home or to your travel destination.

Option 3 – again more expensive this covers you for all of the above and the recovery company will come out if your car has broken down at home and you haven’t even moved out of the drive.

Option 4 - this cover provides all of the above but if the car cannot be repaired promptly they will provide you with such things as a courtesy car for a few days, pay for any overnight accommodation you need and potentially any taxi fares or plane fares you may incur.

Where can you get breakdown cover from?

You find the major providers of breakdown insurance always have stalls at motorway cafes, at your local supermarkets or even in the middle of town centres! You can also call them for quotes but one of the most convenient ways to purchase car breakdown cover is to do it from the comfort of your arm chair and go online for a breakdown quote.
