Credit Card Debt

Credit card debt is a big problem in the UK with the average credit card debt being around £1000, there is little wonder when you consider how easy they are to use and acquire. We are bombarded with credit card advertising and once you have your little plastic friend it is difficult to resist that item you have been wanting for a long time, the question is how do we get out of credit card debt and stay out?

There are some extreme measures that some people use to pay off their credit card debt such as re-mortgaging their home, these should be a last resort though as they can help if you have no other option but there are much better ways of dealing with your credit card debt.

The best method is to pay off as much as you can each month and always pay on time, this way you avoid late payment penalties and also slowly but surely reduce your credit card debt. Paying more than the minimum amount each month (even if only a little bit) is a great thing to do as it reduces your debt more quickly and also gives you a nice feeling inside as you know you are dealing with your credit card debt in a positive way.

If your credit card debt has become too large to manage in this way then you have a few options of which re-mortgaging your home is very much the last option. Why not ring your credit card company and see if they can offer you a better deal? You have nothing to lose by doing this and may well find yourself in a much better situation. You can also switch your credit card to another card with a 0% balance transfer so ring around the credit card companies and see what they can offer, they are likely to offer a better deal as they are always looking for new customers and you may well end up with a lower interest rate as well as the 0% balance transfer (mention this when you talk to your current credit card company).

There is also the option of a debt consolidation loan but only use this if you have many credit card debts and/or other debts, a debt consolidation loan company will take care of all of your debts allowing you to pay that company a single monthly fee. These debt consolidation loans can be a big help to people in serious debt as they can often lead to lower monthly payments and much less worry.

So while negotiating with your current credit card company, switching credit cards to a 0% balance transfer card and taking out a debt consolidation loan all options worth considering it is much better to deal with your credit card debt head on. Pay as much as you can every month and on time and you will know that you are dealing with your credit card debt, some of the options mentioned here may still be applicable if they could save you money but make sure that is the case before you make any decisions.
